Candle magic is often the first spellwork many of us try, and it stays a favourite for a reason: it's simple, focused, and needs very little to begin. Light, colour, and intention are really all you need. Below is a gentle guide to choosing a candle, preparing it, and burning it with purpose — plus how to work safely as you do.
Choosing Your Candle Colour
Match the candle to your intention. If the exact shade isn't to hand, a white candle can always stand in — it holds space for any purpose. For the full meanings behind each colour, see our Colour Magic page.

Preparing Your Candle
Dressing the candle: Many practitioners like to anoint a candle with a small amount of oil suited to the intention — rubbing from the middle outward for drawing something in, or from the ends toward the middle for banishing. A light roll in dried herbs, or a pinch of salt, adds another layer of focus.
Carving your intention: Use a pin, small knife, or even a toothpick to carve a word, symbol, or your own name into the wax before you light it. This gives your intention somewhere to live as the candle burns.
Timing: Some like to work with the moon's phases — waxing for growth and drawing in, waning for release and banishing — or with the day of the week that best matches their intention. None of this is required, but it can add another layer of meaning if it calls to you.
Burning With Intention
As you light the candle, hold your intention clearly in mind. Some prefer to speak it aloud as a short, simple statement; others sit quietly and picture the outcome they're working toward. There's no one right way — the flame is a focus point, not a formula.
Where possible, let the candle burn down safely and completely in one sitting, since many feel this "seals" the working. If you need to extinguish it partway through, snuff rather than blow it out, and relight it when you return to continue the same intention.
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and always burn on a heatproof dish, away from curtains, papers, pets and children. If you can't stay with a candle until it's done, snuff it out and return to it later rather than leaving it to burn alone.
